GRAPHIC DESIGN DEADLINES

Does working to a deadline give graphic designers more drive?

Working to a deadline certainly has advantages and disadvantages.

Based on past experience, the first thing that comes to mind when working with corporate clients is that it can be very difficult to get all of the key decision makers in the same place at the same time, working to a deadline is a great way to establish key dates early on.

Working to a deadline is also a good way to ensure all graphic design services remain on track - for example, a deadline may be required when printing work in the press or in rented banner space (online or offline). In this case, it would be a good idea to set individual deadlines for Branding, Copyrighting, the Advert design and finally have a cooling-off period of around 5 days in case any sudden changes are required before the final deadline.

One key negative, in my opinion, is that I remember designing a logo for a significant corporate client and two days after a short deadline period I was driving home... Whilst stuck in traffic I had the best of my ideas - of course it was already past the point of no return, so the project continued with the original ideas.

My general conclusion is that having deadlines is a good thing - but a degree of flexibility is essential as the best ideas are always worth waiting for.
